Applications

Rheologics' medical device technologies have a broad range of clinical applications revolving around hyperviscosity syndromes, which include:

  • sickle cell anemia and other erythrocyte deformability syndromes;
  • polycythemic conditions that result in reduced blood flow and increased organ congestion;
  • plasma or serum viscosity-related disease states where patients may experience bleeding and neurologic or ocular disorders.

Clinical application of our technologies underscores the importance of the blood, specifically the flow of blood, in creating and aggravating disease states.

The blood is one of the most important organs in the body, responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body and for removing CO2 and waste products from every tissue and organ.  Blood that is too thick or viscous blood cannot sufficiently perfuse target cells.  This systemic and organ-related ischemia is a direct function of blood flow.
