Rheologics was founded in 1998 by Kenneth R. Kensey, MD, a world-renown cardiologist, author and biotechnology innovator. More than 15 years ago, together with Young I. Cho, Ph.D., an internationally recognized expert in fluid mechanics and professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Dr. Kensey began researching the relationship between blood viscosity and the development of vascular disease. They quickly realized that in order to progress, they needed to be able to measure blood viscosity under varying physiologic conditions, and that such a measurement could not be made with the existing technology of that decade. The two researchers predicted that a simple, accurate and clinically practical device for quantifying how thick or thin the blood is would pave the way for major advances in cardiovascular research.
